The most common question in a diabetes clinic is "Doctor, what should I eat?" The answer is rarely a printed diet chart โ it is a set of principles you can apply to the food your family already cooks.
The plate method
At lunch and dinner, mentally divide your plate: half vegetables (sabzi, salad, greens), one quarter protein (dal, chana, rajma, paneer, curd, egg, fish or lean chicken), one quarter grain (roti, rice, millets). This one habit controls portions without weighing anything.
Choose slower carbohydrates
- Whole wheat roti, jowar, bajra, and ragi over maida items
- Brown or hand-pound rice, or simply less white rice with more dal and sabzi
- Whole fruit instead of fruit juice โ the fibre slows sugar absorption
- Steel-cut or rolled oats, dalia, poha with vegetables for breakfast
What to genuinely limit
- Sugar, jaggery, and honey โ all raise blood sugar similarly
- Sweetened drinks, packaged juices, and colas โ liquid sugar hits fastest
- Maida-based foods: bakery items, biscuits, naan, most street snacks
- Deep-fried items โ they add calories and worsen cholesterol
Protein at every meal
Protein steadies blood sugar, preserves muscle, and keeps you full. Indians typically eat too little of it. Include dal, curd, paneer, sprouts, eggs, or fish at every major meal.
Timing and consistency
Eat at roughly the same times daily and avoid long gaps, especially if you are on insulin or sulfonylurea tablets โ this prevents both spikes and dangerous lows. A short 10โ15 minute walk after meals visibly blunts post-meal sugar rise.
Festivals and eating out
Diabetes does not cancel festivals. Take a small portion of the sweet, skip the second helping, balance the day with lighter meals and a longer walk. Guilt-driven starving followed by bingeing is far worse than planned moderation.
The bottom line: there is no "diabetic food" โ there is a diabetic way of eating: half-plate vegetables, slow carbs, protein every meal, minimal sugar and maida, consistent timing. Review your plan with your doctor or a dietitian, especially if your weight, kidney function, or medications change.
