Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death in India, and it is appearing at younger ages than ever before. The good news: most cardiovascular risk is modifiable. You do not need extreme diets or punishing exercise plans — you need small, consistent habits.
1. Walk 30 minutes a day
Brisk walking five days a week reduces blood pressure, improves cholesterol, and helps control weight. If 30 minutes at once is difficult, three 10-minute walks work almost as well.
2. Know your numbers
Blood pressure, fasting blood sugar, HbA1c, and a lipid profile once a year after age 30 — earlier if there is a family history of heart disease or diabetes. You cannot manage what you do not measure.
3. Cut down salt
Keep salt under 5 g (about one teaspoon) per day. Watch hidden salt in pickles, papad, namkeen, and processed food.
4. Choose the right fats
Reduce deep-fried food and vanaspati. Prefer mustard, groundnut, or rice-bran oil in moderation, and include nuts and seeds a few times a week.
5. Eat more fibre
Whole grains, dals, vegetables, and seasonal fruit lower cholesterol and steady blood sugar. Aim to fill half your plate with vegetables.
6. Stop tobacco completely
There is no safe level of tobacco — smoked or chewed. Within one year of quitting, your risk of a heart attack falls dramatically. Ask your doctor about de-addiction support; it works.
7. Limit alcohol
Alcohol raises blood pressure and triglycerides. If you drink, keep it occasional and moderate — and never binge.
8. Sleep 7–8 hours
Chronic poor sleep raises blood pressure and blood sugar. Treat snoring with daytime sleepiness seriously — it may be sleep apnoea, a hidden heart risk.
9. Manage stress
Chronic stress keeps your blood pressure and heart rate elevated. Yoga, pranayama, prayer, music, or simply time with family — build a daily decompression ritual. Mind-body medicine has a real, measurable effect on coronary artery disease.
10. Do not ignore warning signs
Chest heaviness on exertion, unusual breathlessness, jaw or left-arm discomfort, cold sweats — reach a hospital immediately. In a heart attack, every minute of delay costs heart muscle.
The bottom line: prevention is not one grand gesture but a hundred small choices. Start with any two habits this week and build from there.
